When is Industry Experience a Must?

Although the lack of industry experience myth is valid, Aldridge Kerr recognizes there are times when industry experience is a must. EXAMPLES include:
• When the assigned task requires industry-specific expertise
• If a project is missing industry experience to round out a Team

Selecting the right participants to address a need must be based upon clearly-defined requirements and responsibilities so that the appropriate candidate (either Staff or external Resources) can be chosen. Industry experience is one of numerous skills, knowledge, and experience needed to tackle a job. Defining what is needed to bring the best results, most quickly, is intricate in the selection process.

Too much versus too little

As we continue to explore the industry experience myth, let us discuss the “too much versus too little” challenge.

Our last blog provided some insights into the value of seeing situations through “fresh eyes.” That may be difficult to do when there is “too much” industry experience blinding one’s perspectives.

However, we do not want to discount the challenge related to having too little industry experience. The individual or organization must offset a lack of industry expertise with expansive experience, skills, and a “general-view” perspective to equip them to bring value.

Those charged with selecting the right candidates (either Staff or external Resources) to assist the organization must balance this “too little versus too much” challenge.

Fresh Eyes

In our most recent newsletter, we discussed the industry experience myth. There is no disputing the value of having expertise in a specific industry. However, sometimes, knowing an industry extremely well can limit the ability to look at a given issue with “fresh eyes.”

Viewing an issue with “fresh eyes” brings numerous advantages, including but not limited to:
• Adding a previously unconsidered point of view
• Seeing what others may miss
• Minimizing pre-conceived opinions
• Allowing for a broader view of the issue

Whenever a “fresh eyes” view can be incorporated into solving a problem, the solution(s) typically bring greater results.
